Description

The pair of ravens carved from buffalo horn appear to be looking for food.

History

Horn carving is found at various centres in Kerala, notably, Cochin, Trivandrum, Trichur and Kasargode.

Skills

Horn carving is a time consuming process. First the horn which is hard is heated and oiled till it softens and becomes pliable. Then using a fine chisel, it is given the desired shape. The craftsman must be very patient and he acquires the skill in such precise chiseling after much practice.

Aesthetics

The artisan has achieved a smooth, polished surface to the bodies and carved very real looking birds.

Material

Discarded buffalo horn (no animals are harmed) has been used to make this pair of birds.

Care

Horn is breakable and the ensemble must be preferably mounted within a glass case to prevent damage or breakage. If placed without a case, then wipe with a soft, dry cotton cloth to keep clean.
