Description
This vase has been cast in the best of the Bidri traditions. It has highly intricate inlay work in pure silver wire. The glossy silver inlay is set off by the matt black metal, making this vase a breathtakingly beautiful piece.
History
Bidri craft is a purely Indian innovation of a 500 year old Persian craft. Exclusive to Bidar which is situated at the northern tip of Karnataka, the capital city of the Bahamanis in the 16th century, Bidriware has a long and rich tradition.
Skills
The inlay work in this vase is especially difficult to create because of the curved surface of the vase. The craftsman first draws the designs free hand and then etches them with a fine tipped chisel (kalam). Then he inlays silver wire into the grooves created by etching. These processes require intense concentration and precision in execution.
Aesthetics
This vase is unparalleled for its design and craftsmanship. The inlay work is highly intricate and been reproduced in five symmetrical vertical panels along the base and tapering neck of the vase. When placed upright, the entire base and neck of the vase are seen covered in this elaborate and striking silver inlay, making it a stunning piece.
Material
Bidri craft is special because of the materials used in it. Real silver wire is inlaid in fine designs on the black zinc alloy base. Besides being visually striking, bidriwork is also enduring; it does not rust and looks the same for years to come.
Care
To retain lustre of metal, wipe with soft cotton cloth dipped in coconut oil. Polish the silver inlay work with Silver Polish.
