More about the artist
Born in the village of Kathuaganda in the Kendrapara district of Orissa, Brahmanand had an inclination towards art from a very young age. His grandfather Gourahari Rout was the first gold medallist in Fine Arts from the state of Orissa. His father Mangali Charan Rout was also a craftsman, making terracotta statues and murals. By watching them, Brahmanand picked up much of his early flair for painting. But he did not receive any formal training until he finished his schooling. A chance entry into a State level painting competition, saw Brahmanand bagging the first prize for his painting of Lord Jagannath using watercolours. This was the turning point where he decided to take up art as his chosen vocation. Brahmanand then went on to learn Patachitra painting from renowned Patachitra artist and National awardee Bhikari Maharana. In the true guru-shishya tradition he stayed in Bhikari Maharana's house for two years from 1998-2000 while learning the intricacies of Patachitra painting. He started by mastering pencil drawing and then making the outlines of the figures directly in colour. He also learnt about the various folk stories and mythology associated with the depictions found in Patachitras. After that he spent another five years mastering Fine Arts at the Dhauli Art College in Bhubaneswar. Today, Brahmanand and his wife Sukanti Nayak live in Bhubaneswar. He has exhibited his paintings in various parts of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata.
